About me

I study Physics. I'd like to talk about finding purpose in studying what you once loved to study. I can talk about rumination, self worth, self harming thoughts and self-optimisation compulsion.

Funny fact about me

My go-to food is yoghurt with granola :)))

Replying to “Started my studies three weeks ago and have the feeling I belong nowhere, a lot are older than me or a...” Hey:) I relate to that. It was hard to find friends for me and still don’t have a lot. Yet, three weeks might actually be a bit short. So much happens in the first weeks, everyone is so busy and stressed and needs to find people, you talk to so many faces and then they are somewhere else, you meet so many faces but most of them will just be there but not really become friends. I know thats damn hard. And I was also always younger than most, started at 17. But I feel like university is so diverse that it will soon make no difference and you won’t remember and notice that you are younger. Are you feeling behind with the material and overwhelmed by all the stuff to learn? In general I think your plan of doing the Gap year is good. You‘ve been thinking about that before and it seems like you‘d love to do that. And especially if you are younger than and have the financial resources you should take yourself the time. University can wait. Yet, you have already paid the fee for this semester and one month more or less is not so relevant for your travelling. So I would stay strong and give it a chance without a lot of expectations and pressure. :)

Question

Question to TA‘s: how do you prepare your lessons (Physics preferably) efficiently? And do you write on the blackboard or just show slides or beam your tablet to the wall and write there?

Replying to “It’s my first semester at ETH studying physics. I had mentally prepared myself for the stress and I do...” Yeah, get the bonus and don't do extra exercises on the sheets. Focus on the basics and understand them well, and if not, don't drag the topic too much into the next one but just go on and revisit it later. You probably will understand it better later. Time helps:))

Replying to “It’s my first semester at ETH studying physics. I had mentally prepared myself for the stress and I do...” Agree. Yet, try to do a decent amount and understand the basic concept since especially in maths the topics build up upon each other. And also, it will help to see the concepts again a second time in the exam preparation. Then it will be easier.

Replying to “It’s my first semester at ETH studying physics. I had mentally prepared myself for the stress and I do...” Hi:) I get that feeling very well. When I started Physics I was SOOOO well prepared, had everything planned, different plans, best strategies to study and knew the whole Wegleitung as well as other docs for my studies. Then I started with that perfect plan and tried to attend every lecture and most social events and do all exercises and use al the time I had and quickly got in a state of just functioning and repeating day after day but with so much adrenalin that the lack of sleep and stress were manageable. And I continuously adjusted my plans and methods for studying because I felt like I wasn't fast enough, because why was I allll the time just studying even though I had so well prepared and had a plan and effective study methods?!? And of course I knew/later knew that everyone was struggling and that for everyone time was limiting. But I still believed that all my preparation and consideration and optimisation must help more than it seemed. And I still don't know if it really did or didn't. I still don't know what the "right and effective" way of studying Physics really ist for me and how much spending time on exercises is worth it. But I guess your body eventually (a bit too late...) show you when it's too much ynd you will find a range and balance which works. In the beginning I can just tell you that it's normal to do too much, but not necessary to go to your limits. Nobody always manages to do all exercises and fully understand every topic. That is also not expected even though we would all like to already understand it better during the semester. I guess I've talked too much but I can also give you some concrete tipps if you'd like to, how I did it. But I guess sharing experience is as worth it:))

Replying to “For the people who study at hönggerberg: Which cafeteria is better: fusion or food market? I have been...” If you want to feed a whole family and like carbs: foodmarket. If you like asian stuff: Fusion. But the non-asian veggie stuff is most times better at foodmarket, veggie at fusion sometimes is very dry and not really a meal, more like components together on a plate. Personal opinion.

Replying to “5th semester math student here. I still struggle with even simple proofs and any type of "show that......” Here is also a fifth semester physics student. I am also still struggling but fortunately I don’t need to prove a lot haha. I also passed everything but it didnt feel deserved especially the prove parts. I know some people who just have an Intuition but most people learn it on the way. They tell me that I am just so young and at the beginning of my studies and it will come. Because it also has a lot to do with seeing maaaany different ideas, getting an intuition and recognising patterns. But for recognising patterns you first need to see many patterns. That’s the best advice I can give you even though I still feel helpless so often..

Replying to “Do you get lonely living alone? Living away from home, without friends, in a place where you could dis...” Hmmm. Yeah it really feels like you dont matter, right? You are here alone on your own… I guess it teaches one to get along with yourself a lot. Which can be nice. And it can also be nice to not being known so well. Just few people will notice you, so just few people judge you haha. I‘d see it as an explorative phase where you are not binded to people and can just do whatever you want:)

Replying to “How do people find genuine friends well into their studies?” Yes, I experienced that a lot. But then, how do you really know whether they want you around or not... I mean if you feel a vibe, the vibe needs at least to people to be created so if you feel a vibe then keep on trying ig, because on the other side can't be no interest at all. Else, that's very sad and the feeling of not fitting in is exhausting and degrading. I'd like to give the advice: thank you, next... but it's not that easy for me as well. I kind of lost the motivation to try over and over again. Since friendships are something personal you crave it hurts more. I guess a bit of "hardening" one's emotions helps haha

Replying to “How to get motivation to study? During and after lectures, and at the uni I feel somewhat motivated, ...” a short thought on that: I know a friend who stays in the building of ETH to study which makes her study. Thus she doesn't need and also wouldn't study home.

Replying to “i'm struggling a lot with the social aspect of this. it's not like i expected to have close friends af...” I can relate. When I started university I also felt very lonely in the lecture halls because I knew people but never really someone who would wait for me to sit next to me. Yea I guess travelling a lot every day really excludes you a bit from social events. Yet, even the feeling of missing out and having to be at every event to fit in and find friends will fade away. It’s in my opinion actually not sooo important to attend these. Long friendships will eventually arise from repeated exposure and doing stuff together, not attending all late events. In general, doing everything in the first weeks is not as important as it feel like.

Replying to “First week. I miss my home, my old life, my friends and family… I hate this city— it feels like some k...” Wise words;) Most people don’t mind if you talk with them in englisch. Do that and show your real personality in that language:) and if it’s your dream, everything else will fall into place. Foreign things have to much beauty in it. And maybe also try SPH and other cool clubs here to meet likeminded people and do what you love/experience what ETH has to offer apart from lectures.

Replying to “First week. I miss my home, my old life, my friends and family… I hate this city— it feels like some k...” Oh dear, I feel very sorry for you. Feel hugged 🫂 Did you experience homesickness before? Or di you feel like it’s something else as well? Other fears, worries and unfulfilled expectations? Did you move here by your own choice? If yes, what made you move here? What brings you here and gives you a reason to give it a try? If it’s mainly the scenery and city and people, give it time. I know it sounds awful and ehhh but new life stations can have so much interesting and unexpected things in it! And most times you get surprised if you just try long and deeply enough. Please tell me/us more if you‘d like to:)

Replying to “How do you deal with imposter syndrome? ” Actually, I distance myself from people who make me feel like that. And also remind me of what I have done already. But still... And I try to make it all less stressful. I eventually try to get out of that rat race and find what makes me truly happy because then doing the thing itself gives me more than the imposter fear takes. And I have a lot of stuff next to uni. That helps a bit. But i guess the best is to grow into it, into yourself and doing it whatever:))

Replying to “Okay first day people: how are we feeling? Excited / confused / already lost on campus?” Ehh ja I knowww that! I guess be strong but not too strong to not be unapproachable. I face these situations often and I guess you need to try again and again and if they do that again leave them. But that takes time away I know. But its probably worth it. I also initiated many meet ups but it never really worked. I guess it needs to be less „staged“ and planned and more just happening.

Replying to “How do you deal with fomo while studying?” Fair. I think first of all we should distance ourselves from the believe of always striving to be in the right place/doing the right thing. That puts too much pressure on every action and decision which might also take away the former joy of that action. And also, I feel like we need to shift the view more to believing that there are several right places and right things to do. Especially if we can neither fully tell if it is the right thing nor that it is definitely the wrong thing, then there must be several good places to be at/things to do. And I guess it's healthier to see everything as experiences and not a never ending search of finding the right place/thing. But long story short, I still have these emotions/thoughts a lot. And what helps is stressing less about if it's right but doing it and then changing if needed, and reminding myself that I have time.

Replying to “How do people find genuine friends well into their studies?” I am actually in the same situation. I feel like I need friends more than they would need me and every approach ends in no further contact. And I also don’t want to look needy and annoying.

What happens in the first week, how much you understand or how efficient you work does not affect the following months as much as you think.
